Nearly 100 years after our opening, Patisserie Valerie has grown to be one of the most loved bakeries in the UK, with patisseries spanning throughout the UK and Ireland. One of the key factors of our success has been to build a strong reputation based on the quality of our lovingly handmade cakes and patisseries, using only the freshest ingredients and traditional baking methods. Our Story
1922
Patisserie Valerie all started when Theophile Vermeirsch (a pastry chef) met Esther Van Gyseghem. The two married and moved from Belgium to London on a mission to introduce fine Continental Patisserie to the English.
1926
Theo and Esther opened a Belgian patisserie in Dean Street Soho and called it "Patisserie Valerie”. It was an instant success. Theo ran the bakery and Esther looked after the finances and front of house. Esther was fondly referred to as “Madame Valerie” by her customers.
1943
During the Second World War the Dean Street premises were bombed by the Luftwaffe and Madam Valerie subsequently set up shop around the corner in Old Compton Street where her legacy continues to this day in our Soho branch.
1975
Sadly, Madame Valerie passed away in 1975 and the business was acquired by the three Scalzo brothers - Enzo, Robert and Victor in 1987. They had plans to develop several sites across Central London.
1993
In May 1993, a second patisserie was built in Sagne, Marylebone. This was followed by the Kensington branch in 2002, the Belgravia and the Chelsea branch in 2003 and the Piccadilly and the Spitalfields branch in 2005.
2006
Since developing the London locations, Patisserie Valerie saw enough success to expand nationally, building patisseries across the UK that are known and loved to this day.
