One Iconic Bakery Our story began in 1926, when husband-and-wife team Theo and Esther opened a Belgian patisserie in Soho, London. It was an instant hit. Theo crafted exquisite cakes and pastries from Esther’s grandmother’s treasured secret recipes, while Esther – fondly known by customers as “Madame Valerie” – managed the finances and front of house, welcoming guests with her warmth and charm. Nearly a century later, we’re still baking with the same love, care, and attention to detail.
Every cake is handmade using the finest ingredients and traditional techniques, a dedication to quality that has made us one of the UK’s most loved bakeries. Sustainability is part of our recipe too – from responsible sourcing to carbon-neutral shipping.

Our Story
1922 - A Sweet Beginning
Belgian pastry chef Theophile Vermeirsch met Esther Van Gyseghem. United by love and a passion for fine patisserie, they moved to London to introduce continental-style cakes and pastries to a new audience.

1926: Patisserie Valerie Opens
Theo and Esther opened their first Belgian patisserie on Dean Street, Soho. It was an instant success. Theo created exquisite cakes from Esther’s grandmother’s secret recipes, while Esther – affectionately called “Madame Valerie” – ran the finances and greeted customers with warmth.


1943: Resilience In The Face Of War
The Dean Street shop was destroyed during a Luftwaffe bombing raid in WWII. Refusing to give up, Madame Valerie reopened around the corner on Old Compton Street, Soho.
1975-1987: A New Chapter
After Madame Valerie’s passing, the business continued under her name and, in 1987, was acquired by the Scalzo brothers, who began expanding beyond Soho.


1993-2005: Expanding Across London
Marylebone (1993) was followed by Kensington (2002), Belgravia and Chelsea (2003), and Piccadilly and Spitalfields (2005).
2006 - A National Name
With a loyal London following, Patisserie Valerie expanded nationwide, bringing handcrafted cakes and patisseries to towns and cities across the UK.


2020: Adapting Through the Pandemic
When the Covid-19 pandemic forced our patisseries to close, we launched Patisserie Valerie Online, offering nationwide delivery for the first time. Customers could enjoy our signature cakes at home, helping keep the brand alive during lockdowns.
2021: Wholesale & Corporate Growth
We expanded into wholesale and corporate partnerships, supplying premium cakes and patisseries to leading retailers, hospitality partners, and gifting businesses.

2023: Online Innovation & Brand Collaborations
New product ranges, limited-edition collections, and collaborations with iconic UK brands strengthened our e-commerce presence and broadened our audience.


2025: Expanding Horizons
We launched direct delivery throughout Ireland, opening our online experience to an entirely new customer base.
2026: A Century of Cakes
Our 100-year centenary will be celebrated with the Centenary Range – a heritage-inspired collection paired with elevated packaging, marking a century of craftsmanship and looking ahead to the next chapter in our story.
